Retrievable Production Packers
A retrievable production packer is a downhole sealing device set in the production casing to isolate the producing zone from the wellbore annulus above it. It directs reservoir fluids into the production tubing and seals the annulus to prevent cross-flow between zones or fluid migration to surface. Unlike a permanent packer, a retrievable packer can be released and pulled to surface with the tubing string during a workover — allowing the well to be recompleted or the packer to be reused.
What a Retrievable Production Packer Does
The packer is run on the tubing string to the required depth and set — either by mechanical manipulation (weight and rotation) or hydraulic pressure. Once set, the packing element expands outward to seal against the casing wall, and slip segments grip the casing to anchor the packer against upward and downward movement.
In production service, the packer:
- Isolates the producing interval from the wellbore annulus
- Allows gas lift, chemical injection, or annulus pressure monitoring through the tubing-casing annulus
- Prevents fluid from migrating up the annulus to the wellhead
- Supports the tubing string in tension or compression depending on configuration
To retrieve, the tubing is manipulated to release the slips and packing element collapses, allowing the packer to be pulled with the tubing string.
Featured Product — MAPSET® Retrievable Packer
The MAPSET® is Proxima’s best-selling downhole completion tool — a field-proven mechanical set retrievable production packer from MAP Oil Tools with decades of operational history in onshore and offshore production wells.
MAPSET® Standard
The MAPSET® is a single-string, mechanical set, retrievable production packer designed for standard production service. It is set by applying tubing weight and right-hand rotation — no special setting tool required. The simple, robust design makes it straightforward to run, set, and retrieve in field operations.

Why Source Through Proxima
Proxima is the regional distributor of MAP Oil Tools completion equipment in Azerbaijan and the Caspian region. We maintain local stock of MAPSET® packers in standard sizes for fast delivery — a critical advantage for workover operations where rig time is expensive. Our completion engineers review your well data and confirm the correct packer model, size, and elastomer selection before supply.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What makes the MAPSET® the best-selling packer in Proxima’s portfolio?
The MAPSET® combines a simple mechanical set mechanism — no special tools required — with proven reliability in onshore production wells. Its straightforward operation reduces running risk in the field, and its robust design gives long service life between workovers. It is the standard choice for most production well completions in Azerbaijan and the Caspian region.
Q: How do I select the correct MAPSET® size?
Selection requires tubing OD, casing ID (and weight), required depth, maximum expected differential pressure, and well temperature. Proxima engineers confirm the correct size and elastomer specification from your well data.
Q: What elastomer options are available for H₂S service?
MAP Oil Tools packers are available with HNBR and other elastomers suitable for H₂S and CO₂ service. Specify well fluid composition — H₂S partial pressure, CO₂ content, temperature — when ordering. The wrong elastomer selection is a common cause of packer element failure.
Q: Can the MAPSET® be used in a deviated well?
Yes. The MAPSET® is used routinely in moderately deviated wells. For highly deviated or horizontal wells, the hydraulic set MFH or MFHL may be more appropriate. Proxima engineers advise on the correct tool for your well trajectory.
Q: Does Proxima stock MAPSET® packers in Baku?
Yes. We maintain local stock of standard MAPSET® sizes. Contact us for current availability — we can typically confirm stock and delivery within one business day.
