Stuffing Boxes
A stuffing box is the wellhead component that seals the moving polished rod against the well's flowing pressure. It is mounted at the top of the Christmas tree or tubing head, and the polished rod passes through it vertically. The stuffing box contains packing elements — typically rubber or PTFE — that compress around the polished rod to create a dynamic seal. Without a functional stuffing box, the well vents to atmosphere around the polished rod — an environmental and safety hazard.
What a Stuffing Box Does
The stuffing box performs two simultaneous functions:
1. Seals well pressure — preventing fluid, gas, and vapour from escaping around the polished rod
2. Guides the polished rod — keeping it centred and aligned through the sealing element
The packing elements inside the stuffing box are consumable — they wear against the polished rod surface over time and must be replaced during routine maintenance. Packing life depends on polished rod surface finish, rod speed, fluid abrasiveness, and wellhead pressure.
WNS Lowery stuffing boxes are designed for easy packing replacement — a critical feature for operators performing routine maintenance across large rod lift fleets.
Product Range — WNS Lowery
Low-Pressure Stuffing Box
Standard stuffing box for rod lift wells with low to moderate wellhead pressure. Suitable for the majority of onshore production wells in Azerbaijan and the Caspian region. Simple, field-maintainable design with easy packing access.
- Service: Low-pressure rod lift wells
- Packing: Field-replaceable without removing the stuffing box
- Construction: Carbon steel standard
Performance Style Stuffing Box (3 000 / 5 000 PSI Threaded)
The WNS Lowery Performance Style stuffing box is a higher-pressure threaded design for wells with elevated wellhead pressure. Available in 3 000 PSI and 5 000 PSI working pressure ratings with threaded connection to the wellhead.
- Pressure rating: 3 000 PSI or 5 000 PSI WP
- Connection: Threaded
- Packing: High-performance packing elements for higher pressure and temperature service
High-Pressure Flanged Stuffing Box (5 000 PSI)
The flanged version of the high-pressure stuffing box for wells where a flanged wellhead connection is required. 5 000 PSI working pressure with API flange connection.
- Pressure rating: 5 000 PSI WP
- Connection: API flanged
- Application: High-pressure wells, flanged Christmas tree configurations
ITBOP — Integrated Tee BOP
The ITBOP (Integrated Tee BOP) combines a stuffing box and a rod BOP (blow-out preventer) in a single unit. The BOP rams can close around the polished rod or blank off the wellbore completely during a well control event or polished rod change — without requiring a separate BOP stack above the stuffing box.
This integrated design reduces the height of the wellhead assembly and eliminates the need for a separate BOP unit on rod lift wells — a significant practical advantage for high-density well pad operations.
Hybrid Flapper Stuffing Box Combo
The WNS Lowery Hybrid Flapper Stuffing Box Combo integrates a flapper-type BOP with the stuffing box. The flapper provides a quick-closing well barrier independent of the stuffing box packing, allowing the stuffing box to be serviced safely under pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How often does stuffing box packing need to be replaced?
Packing life varies with rod speed, wellhead pressure, fluid abrasiveness, and polished rod surface finish. On a well-maintained rod lift well with a good polished rod, packing may last 3–6 months. In abrasive or high-pressure service, replacement may be needed monthly. Proxima supplies packing elements in bulk quantities for fleet maintenance programmes.
Q: What polished rod sizes are the stuffing boxes available for?
WNS Lowery stuffing boxes are available for standard polished rod sizes from 1" to 1½". Specify your polished rod OD when ordering to ensure the correct bore and packing size.
Q: What is the advantage of the ITBOP over a standard stuffing box plus separate BOP?
The ITBOP reduces wellhead height, eliminates one flange connection, and provides integrated well control capability in a single unit. For operators running large numbers of rod lift wells, the simplified wellhead stack reduces installation cost and maintenance complexity.
Q: Can packing be replaced without killing the well?
Yes. WNS Lowery stuffing boxes are designed for live well packing replacement — the packing can be changed under pressure using proper wellhead isolation procedures. The ITBOP and Hybrid Flapper Combo provide additional safety during this operation.
Q: Are stuffing boxes available for sour service?
Yes. Packing materials and body materials for H₂S service are available. Specify your H₂S concentration and wellhead pressure when ordering.
